£2234.80 Raised for Headway - The Brain injury association

Andrew Wall with Mum Wendy Heath and stepdad Dave Heath
Head2Spain.org.uk Motorcycle trip to Spain was organised & self financed by Dave & Wendy Heath & family with no support team or support vehicles, One Motorcycle two up and carried their own luggage on a Suzuki GSX1400. Dave & Wendy Heath planned to travel on the bike for a 2300 mile round trip to Northern Spain to raise money for Headway, the brain injury association. They set off on June 30th 2006 from Alfreton Derbyshire.
It has been my dream for quite a while to ride down to Spain on my motorbike, which we had decided when we do do it, it would be for a charity. Headway is our chosen charity for reasons you will read below. I have added a page of our route Click here for the route page.
I have ridden abroad before on my old 600 bandit in 2004, and in 2005 I took my current bike (GSX1400) over to France, Belgium & into Holland.
100% of all donations* went to Headway. click on image to right to see letter from headway to confirm we officially fundraised on their behalf.

    Why Support Headway?
This charity was chosen as it relies almost entirely on donations, and also Wendy’s son Andrew Wall was involved in an accident in which he sustained near fatal brain injuries on 5th November ’05 Andrew was a pedestrian just starting to cross the road in Chesterfield in the town centre after going to a cash machine so he could go to a night club and was hit by a taxi while crossing, I can't really comment on on the accident too much at this point as it is still under investigation with the police. From the information we do have about the accident it was not the car that did the injuries it was when Andrew hit the floor that major head injuries occurred. Initially we were told that night by Chesterfield Royal Hospital Andrew would not under any circumstances survive his injuries, Andrew was not responding to anything and we consulted with the hospital regarding donating his organs and he was kept in ITU. Monday 7th November 05 was the date for the brain stem test to see if there was any brain activity, which was going to take place in the afternoon, but that morning a nurse said she had had a response from wiping his face, Andrew was then rushed immediately to the Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield to have a blood clot removed from his brain, a large section of his skull was removed (about the size of your hand and left out so the brain could swell. the surgeons said that despite having the operation his injuries were so severe he would not survive more than 48hrs, and we were told only a miracle could save him. After around 2 weeks we were then told if he did come out of the coma he wouldn't walk, talk, or recognise anyone and be paralysed on his right hand side. To cut a long story short, All I can say is miracles do happen, Andrew came out of the coma shortly after a month, and has been recovering amazingly, more than we could have ever have wished for, He can now walk and talk, though he has problems with his memory, some cognitive problems and his vision. Andrew was at Osborn 4 Northern General Hospital, Sheffield and was discharged 7th March 2006 after over 4 months in Hospital.
Headway help people understand about brain injury, they provide information, support and services to survivors, their families and carers. Brain injury can mean problems with balance, thinking skills, memory, concentration, speech and language. It can also cause changes in behaviour, physical difficulties, head pain, epilepsy, sensory loss and even lack of awareness the injury has caused, it is very hard for families to cope without the help and support of headway.
